Wheatbelt Weekend – Mukinbudin

Enjoy the drive with an upbeat road trip soundtrack and you’ll be in Muk

Check into the Mukinbudin Caravan Park in either one of the three-bedroom houses, a self-contained unit, a railway barrack or a powered/unpowered site and then take the time to explore the townsite. Start at the Men’s Shed! – Bill is always happy to show you around the Shed with a commentary on machinery and items of yesteryear. Ready for dinner? Head to the Mukinbudin Pub (open 4pm – 8pm for meals) for one (or two) on the wood and a classic pub meal – we recommend the Chicken Mignon! Then back to the Caravan Park to exchange yarns with fellow travellers around the open campfire.

Don’t forget to download the Wheatbelt Way app prior to heading off, to ensure you are up to date with events and wildflower locations.

We recommend visiting the Mukinbudin Café (open 7am – 8pm) for breakfast for a hearty start to the day. Stock up on essentials for a barbecue dinner in the local IGA, and call into Muka Butchers (Saturday 9am – 12pm) for local beef and lamb that you will rave about to your friends back home. Buy some snags too for a bush BBQ and off you go!

You’ll want to put aside the day to explore the granite outcrops surrounding Mukinbudin, giving you time to immerse in the great outdoors. Travel out to Beringbooding Rock (70kms north east) and take your time exploring – find ancient rock art, a balancing boulder, a huge and atmospheric gnamma hole and the largest water catchment tank in Australia. Take time off from your wanderings to crank up the barbecue and cook those sausages for a quintessential bush meal. Don’t forget to BYO firewood.

Make your way to Weira Reserve and take a short walk through the bush to discover the large gnamma holes – always a great spot to find tadpoles and hear the elusive frogs croaking in the undergrowth. Keep an eye out for orchids and everlastings! Climb to the top of the limestone breakaway which is the perfect spot to finish the day with a sundowner, watching a spectacular Wheatbelt sunset over the surrounding bushland.

Once back at the Caravan Park, make the most of the unique shearing shed-themed Campers Kitchen and rustle up a feed. Then kick back once again around the open campfire to reflect on the days wanderings.

Pick up a toastie and coffee from the Café and on the way home visit other sites on the Wheatbelt Way such as the historic Mangowine Homestead and Minnivale townsite.
