There’s a specific kind of magic that settles over There’s a specific kind of magic that settles over our towns in May. As the summer heat retreats, the dust settles and the air grows quiet enough to hear the echoes of the past. It’s the perfect season to wander through our museumsβ€”not rushing, just listening to the stories held within the walls.

Here, history isn't just a date on a plaque; it’s the worn grain of a wooden tool, the scent of old paper, and the preserved memories of those who shaped this red earth long ago. The Wheatbelt has a thousand chapters to share; which town’s museum is your favorite to get lost in? πŸ“–βœ¨

Crisp mornings, fewer flies, and that fresh smell Crisp mornings, fewer flies, and that fresh smell as the landscape starts to turn green again. More wildlife begins to appear, native plants start to bloom, and of course β€” it’s the perfect weather to get out and explore our many granite outcrops. Not to mention those evenings spent around a campfire with friends.

The light softens, the air cools, and the granite outcrops seem to glow just that little bit more as the seasons begin to shift. It’s a time to slow down, take the scenic route, and really soak in the beauty of the landscape.

This is your reminder of just how special it can be β€” a flashback to some of the incredible moments captured by our talented Wheatbelt Way photographers in the 2021 Wheatbelt Way Photo Competition. Each image tells its own story of the region, the light, and the quiet magic of autumn out here.

It’s easy to stay on the main road.

But the Wheatbelt rewards those who choose curiosity over convenience.

A small turn-off can lead to a quiet reserve, a local town or a moment of stillness you didn’t plan for β€” and didn’t know you needed. These are the places that stay with you long after the drive is over.

It’s often the smaller roads that leave the biggest impression.

They invite you to drive slower, look closer and connect more deeply with the places you pass through. Along the Wheatbelt Way, these quieter roads tell stories of land, history and community β€” if you’re willing to listen.

There’s a quiet freedom in travelling without a strict plan.

No set arrival time.

No pressure to keep moving.

Just the option to stop when something catches your eye and stay a little longer than expected.

Some journeys aren't about how quickly you arrive.

They’re about the space in-between - the quiet road, the changing landscape, and they moments where you realise you don’t need to be anywhere else just yet.

Travelling the Wheatbelt Way invites you to slow down, take the long way and let the road set the pace. Sometimes thats where the best stories begin.

βœ” No fires on High Fire Danger Rating days or during a Total Fire Ban
βœ” Keep your fire small and manageable – no bonfires
βœ” Clear the area around your fire
βœ” Use designated fire pits where provided
βœ” Have water or a way to extinguish your fire close by
βœ” Stay with your fire at all times

πŸ‘‰ Your fire = your responsibility

🚫 Firewood restrictions – please read if you’re travelling from Perth or other affected areas

If you are visiting from the Perth metropolitan area or other affected regions, please do not bring your own firewood.

The Polyphagous shot-hole borer is a serious pest, and moving firewood is one of the main ways it spreads. Restrictions are in place to prevent infected wood being brought into regional WA.

πŸ”₯ The borer can travel long distances when firewood is moved
πŸ”₯ Burning infested wood can spread the pest further
What we ask of visitors:

🚫 Do not bring firewood from quarantine areas
🚫 Do not collect firewood from reserves or campgrounds
βœ… Buy your firewood locally in Wheatbelt Way towns

Supporting local firewood suppliers helps protect our landscapes, farms and communities β€” and backs local businesses too.
